Mahindra Thar Roxx Common Problems: Steering, DPF, 4×4 & Costs

Mahindra Thar Roxx common problems include steering knocks (at least 12 owners), diesel DPF (diesel particulate filter) warnings (13 owners facing issues), infotainment faults (22 owners) and fuel line rubbing (4 owners). No recall of the Thar Roxx was found, and no source publishes failure rates, so take warning lights and steering noise to an authorised workshop.

As of October 23, 2026, outlets disagree on a Roxx facelift. Motoroids reports spy shots of a Roxx test car, while the brand has officially launched the 3-door Thar as Thar OG in the Indian market. Mahindra has confirmed no details, so this guide covers the Roxx on sale today. Confirm current details with Mahindra or an authorised Mahindra dealer before you act on any figure here.

A steering column can knock over a bump, and a diesel can show a regeneration warning on delivery day. Buyers of new and used cars then have to judge whether a fault is real or the behaviour is normal. This guide sorts reported Roxx issues by how much evidence stands behind them and keeps what Mahindra’s owner’s manual says apart from what owners report. It adds the recall record, service costs, warranty and buying checks for new and used buyers. Use the evidence labels to decide how much weight each report deserves.

Every problem below is a report from an owner, a reviewer or a news outlet unless the text says the manual documents it. The manual used here is the Mahindra Thar Roxx owner’s manual, issued August 2024 and released April 2025. The web edition read for this guide stops before its emission control, 4×4 operation and maintenance chapters. The Warranty and Service Information Guide (WSIG) that the manual points to was unavailable. Those topics therefore rest on owner reports and trade press, and the text says so each time. Warning lights, brakes, steering and airbags belong with an authorised workshop. Facts were checked as of October 23, 2026.

Which Mahindra Thar Roxx do you own?

The Mahindra Thar Roxx is the 5-door Thar. It comes with a 2.0 litre turbo petrol in rear-wheel drive only or a 2.2 litre turbo diesel in rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. Six trims run from MX1 to AX7L, and the STAR EDN, called the Star edition by CarDekho, sits alongside as a rear-wheel-drive edition.

Engines, gearboxes and drive by trim

According to Autocar India’s specification page, the Roxx has a 2.0 litre turbo petrol and a 2.2 litre turbo diesel. Mahindra’s STAR EDN release names them mStallion and mHawk, which are Mahindra’s names for the two engines. Autocar India lists four-wheel drive (4WD) with lockable differentials on the diesel only. A differential lets the two wheels on an axle turn at different speeds, and locking it forces them to turn together. CarDekho’s post-GST price table shows 4WD on the MX5 manual, the AX7L manual, and the AX5L and AX7L automatics, all diesel. That release lists the STAR EDN as rear-wheel drive only.

Outputs differ by tune and year. Mahindra’s STAR EDN release lists the diesel at 128.6 kW and 400 Nm and the petrol at 130 kW and 380 Nm. Rushlane’s launch list gave the diesel as 150 hp and 330 Nm or 171 hp and 370 Nm. A torque converter automatic is a conventional automatic that couples engine and gearbox through fluid.

Scope of this guide

The scope here is the 5-door Roxx only. Readers who searched for Mahindra Thar common problems and own the 3-door Thar should read 3-door sources. Every report here comes from Roxx owners unless the text labels it as another car.

How this guide labels evidence

Each problem carries one of five labels, so you can see how much weight a report deserves.

  • Documented by Mahindra: stated in the owner’s manual or on a Mahindra page or release.
  • Several reports: three or more separate owners or outlets describe it.
  • Few reports: two separate sources describe it.
  • Single report: one owner or one test car.
  • None found: searched for, with no source located.

Owner reports show that something happens to some cars. No source read for this guide publishes a failure rate, so no report here tells you how many Roxx cars are affected. Reports about the 3-door Thar never count as Roxx evidence.

What are the most common Mahindra Thar Roxx problems?

Mahindra Thar Roxx problems that owners report include a knocking steering column, diesel regeneration warnings, infotainment and camera glitches, fuel lines rubbing near the engine cover and a sensitive start-stop. The counts come from one forum and are minimums. No Mahindra document read for this guide lists any of them as a known fault.

How to read the table

Read the table as a map of what to check. How often each issue occurs is unknown, so the row order carries no ranking. Infotainment faults have the most owner accounts (at least 22), then DPF warnings (at least 13) and steering noise (at least 12). Each count is a minimum from one forum, and the detailed guides in the last column hold the dated reports.

Why does the Thar Roxx steering knock or make noise?

At least 12 Roxx owners on Team-BHP report a steering noise between February 2025 and March 2026, nine of them as a knock, tak tak or kut-kut. Owners say workshops re-tightened bolts or replaced steering parts, with mixed results, and no Mahindra notice names a cause or a fix.

What owners report about the steering knock

As we go through the owner posts on the Team-BHP Roxx review thread, the first steering noise is dated February 2025 (page 165), and the newest is the March 2026 long-term review. Owners write knocking, tak tak and kut-kut, and some use more than one word. The count of 12 is a minimum, since it counts each owner once and comes from one forum. By month of first report, it runs February 2025 (2), May (2), July (1), September (1), October (2), November (1), December (2) and March 2026 (1). Thread pages after March 2, 2026 show no new owner, which fits a fade and cannot show that Mahindra fixed anything. Evidence label: Several reports.

In the part of the manual read for this guide, steering appears in the warning list. The manual’s warning section (3.12.3) includes an electric power steering (EPS) malfunction alert shown while the engine runs. EPS is the electric motor that assists the steering. The readable text gives no guidance on knocks or noises and no driver action for the alert. The February 2026 release adds steering lock alerts in section 3.12.5, also with no driver action.

What did workshops do about the steering noise and did it work?

Owners report the actions below, and no single action worked for every owner. An owner can appear in more than one row.

Action as reportedOwnersOutcome as reportedEvidence label
Fasteners or shaft tightened6Noise gone for one owner, about 85 per cent less for another, a knock that dropped and returned after about 600 km for a third, and no fix or noise still present for threeSeveral reports

Two workshops are reported to have named a loose intermediate shaft, an Ahmedabad dealer in June 2025 and a Bengaluru service centre in May 2025, and one owner heard a loose dashcam hardwiring module suggested. Each statement reaches this guide second-hand through an owner. Evidence label: Few reports for a loose intermediate shaft, Single report for the dashcam module, None found for a Mahindra document naming a cause.

Service action claims

Three statements about a Mahindra action appear in the threads, all from owner accounts. In an October 2025 post, an owner says Mahindra has implemented a service action on the intermediate shaft bolts, and the March 2026 long-term review calls the same work an official recall. On June 12, 2025, a poster in Ahmedabad wrote on page 214 of the thread that there has been an update for the EPS, with no details and no Mahindra source. No Mahindra recall, service action, bulletin or statement on the steering noise was found as of October 23, 2026, so treat all three as unconfirmed. A service action is a manufacturer’s free repair campaign for a defined batch of cars. Evidence label: Several reports for the claims; none found for a Mahindra document.

What to do about steering noise

Take the car to an authorised workshop when you hear a knock, feel the steering tighten or see the EPS alert. Ask the workshop to record the visit on the job card. The steering noise guide holds each owner’s dated report. Steering owner posts checked as of October 23, 2026, and forum threads keep growing, so recheck before relying on one case.

What do DPF and regeneration warnings mean on a diesel Thar Roxx?

On a diesel Thar Roxx, the manual describes a REGEN page for cars fitted with the feature when park regeneration is possible. Two owner accounts describe regen warnings. The manual’s emission control chapter could not be read for this guide.

DPF, regeneration and DEF in plain words

The DPF sits in the exhaust of a diesel car and traps soot. Regeneration is the clean-up process that clears the trapped soot. The manual’s contents page lists the DPF, the diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) under its emission control system. Two sections are titled Alerts in Cluster and Regen Alerts. Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) is the liquid the SCR system uses. The web edition cut off that chapter. The conditions that start a regen and the meaning of each alert are unconfirmed here.

What the manual shows

Section 3.4.5 of the manual lists a REGEN page under Drive Information, marked as fitted only on some cars. The page appears when the vehicle can perform park regeneration, with the DPF lamp on or blinking and the REGEN telltale showing. A long press of the OK button starts it. Section 3.5.4 shows the DEF level on the cluster’s Fuel Info page for diesel cars. Section 3.12.3 lists a message for water detected in the fuel filter on diesel variants only, while the engine runs. The manual gives no driver action for that message in the text read. Evidence label for these three items: documented by Mahindra.

Whether every diesel Roxx carries the REGEN page and the DEF display is unconfirmed, since the manual marks both as fitted only on some cars.

What owners and the press report

As we go through the owner posts on the Team-BHP Roxx review thread and a second Team-BHP thread, we count at least 13 diesel Roxx owners who report a DPF or regeneration warning between November 2024 and October 2026. The first is a November 2024 post on page 126 from an AX5L diesel automatic owner in Udaipur.

Owners quote “DPF Clogged” and “REGEN Required”. Eight of the 13 describe city or short-trip driving before the warning; one saw it on delivery day at 12 km, and the reported frequency runs from about every 500 km to a weekly warning. Those figures come from different cars and drivers, so they cannot be turned into a rate. The count is a minimum from one forum, and the sources do not state the fuel for every Roxx owner. Evidence label: Several reports.

What the owner reports clears itOwnersTime or distanceEvidence label
Park regeneration from the menu3About 10 to 15 minutesSeveral reports
Higher rpm or highway driving4About 3 km to about 10 minutesSeveral reports
An engine control unit (ECU) data flash at the second service1The owner believes it reduced the city warningsSingle report

These are owner experiences. The only step in Mahindra’s readable text is the long press of OK on the REGEN page, and Mahindra’s figure for regeneration time was not found. Two AX5L diesel automatic owners report no DPF warning over a year and about 19,600 km (Few reports of no event). CarToq reported on August 4, 2025 a Roxx with just over 1,200 km on a record attempt drive that showed engine warning and faulty sensor messages, which the outlet linked to DPF regeneration. The car covered about 160 km at about 30 kph and was returned fixed the next afternoon (Single report).

Mahindra’s readable pages give no verdict on whether a DPF warning is normal or a fault. Autocar India’s Ask Autocar answer of July 17, 2026 says real problems tend to affect cars used only for short, low speed city trips. None of the 13 owners reports a workshop-diagnosed fault or a part replaced for it. One owner says a bulletin and a warranty circular exist for a clamp between the turbo and the DPF, with no Mahindra document seen (Single report, October 2026). No Mahindra recall, service action or software notice naming Roxx DPF or regeneration was found as of October 26, 2026.

One report about another car adds context and counts as 3-door Thar evidence. In August 2023, Team-BHP reported a 3-door Thar diesel automatic that showed a DPF clogged message and slowed to 40 km/h.

Photograph any regen or DPF display, write down the speed and the length of the trip, and take it to an authorised workshop. Follow the manual’s emissions chapter for the steps on your own car, since this guide could not read it. The DPF warning guide covers the topic in depth. Owner posts and CarToq checked as of October 26, 2026; the manual text read as of October 23, 2026.

How is the Thar Roxx 4×4 used, and which faults do owners report?

The Roxx cluster shows 4H or 4L with an animation when four-wheel drive is engaged, and owners describe 2H (the default two-wheel-drive mode), 4H and 4L. One owner reports a 4×4 actuator replaced after the front wheels would not drive off-road. No jammed shift lever reports turned up.

Which Roxx variants have 4×4

Four-wheel drive comes on the diesel only, from the MX5, and the petrol and the STAR EDN are rear-wheel drive. Autocar India’s specification page lists lockable differentials and a 650 mm wading depth. Rushlane’s launch report noted that the base MX1 had no 4WD option. The manual’s driving through water section sits outside the part read for this guide, so the wading figure comes from the specification page.

What the manual shows

Section 3.6.5 of the manual says the cluster shows 4H with an animation when four-wheel drive high range is engaged and 4L with an animation for low range. With two-wheel drive or neutral, only the wheels and axles appear. Sections 3.1.8 and 3.1.9 show the drive and terrain mode on the cluster. The drive modes are Zip, Zoom, Snow, Sand and Mud on the digital cluster, and the terrain modes are Normal, Snow, Sand and Mud. The 4WD operating chapter, with its speed and gear conditions, was cut off. Evidence label: documented by Mahindra, for the display only.

What an owner says about shifting

A CarToq report on an owner’s video, dated June 12, 2025, quotes an unnamed Roxx owner. He says 4H can be engaged on the move, although stopping first is a good idea. He says 4L needs neutral, with the driver pressing the 4×4 knob and pulling it down. He adds that a cluster light confirms 4H or 4L. The report also says the car should never run on the road in 4H, because it can damage the transfer case, and should return to 2H after off-roading. Treat that as one owner’s description and read the manual’s 4WD chapter for the procedure on your own car. The owner calls the control a knob, which matters for the planned guide on a hard or jammed Roxx 4×4 shift lever.

What owners report going wrong

One long-term owner reports that the front wheels would not spin in 4H or 4L when he entered a trail, an issue the Team-BHP long-term review of an AX7L 4×4 diesel places before his first service. The dealer workshop replaced the 4X4 actuator and the fault stopped. The review gives no odometer reading, cost or warranty status. Evidence label: single report.

A second owner, in a 16,000 km review, took a 4×4 course and trail drives and reports no fault from the off-roading.

No report of a hard, stiff or jammed shift selector on the Roxx turned up. Evidence label: none found. As of October 23, 2026, no report of a jammed Roxx shift lever has turned up in the sources linked here.

Rear differential oil

The same 17,000 km owner lists a second service at 9,000 km, billed at Rs 5,500, when the rear differential oil was changed. The manual’s maintenance chapter and the WSIG, which would give the oil grade and interval, were unavailable, so no interval is stated here. A planned guide on the differential oil change will cover it.

What engine, gearbox and fuel line faults do owners report?

At least 10 Team-BHP owners post about Roxx fuel lines, and four report a line rubbing the engine cover or firewall. Owners also report one ATF hose leak with limp mode, a transmission warning with a stuck shifter and a slow, shuddering start-stop.

ItemWhat is describedSource and dateEvidence

As we go through the owner posts on the Team-BHP Roxx review thread, the first fuel line post is dated February 8, 2025 and the last owner account is dated March 2, 2026. Among the five owners who name a variant, four say AX7L and one says AX5L, and every owner who states a fuel says diesel. Owners report service centres wedging foam behind the lines, filing the engine cover and replacing lines under warranty, and some owners padded or tied the lines themselves.

The manual’s section 1.4 says non-Mahindra parts are not covered by the Mahindra warranty, so ask the workshop before altering anything. One owner’s theory blames sharp cover edges and a thicker pipe on the higher-tuned diesels, and Mahindra has made no statement. No breakdown, fire or fuel smell from rubbing is reported.

No Mahindra recall, service action or bulletin naming the Roxx fuel line was found as of October 26, 2026, and the Service Action page lists no campaigns. A shifter that sticks, a hose leak, and a fuel line that wears through each belong in front of a workshop. The fuel line rubbing guide holds the dated owner table. Checked as of October 26, 2026 for the fuel line items and October 23, 2026 for the rows below them.

Gearbox behaviour and manual warnings

An automatic Roxx owner says in a Team-BHP 2,000 km report, July 29, 2025 that the gearbox does not upshift before about 2,000 rpm, which he finds irritating in city driving. The Autocar India report lists about 10 km/l, so budget fuel accordingly.

The manual’s warnings in section 3.12.3 cover engine check, oil pressure and high temperature. Section 3.1.4 gives these steps if the gauge moves toward H: switch off the air conditioning and check the coolant level, topping up if needed. If the gauge stays high, stop and let the engine cool, and contact a dealer if it still overheats. The manual says never to open the degassing tank cap on a hot engine. Evidence label for these manual items: documented by Mahindra.

What smaller electrical and comfort faults do owners report?

At least 22 Team-BHP owners describe an infotainment fault on their own car, from screen blackouts and camera faults to CarPlay drops, equaliser resets and app failures. Owners also describe a sticking fuel flap, a door rattle, weak wipers in heavy rain and small door pockets, and a steering wheel lock malfunction message; cracked fog lamps and a stuck sunroof appear on one test car. Most items outside the infotainment rows come from single or few reports.

As we go through the owner posts on the Team-BHP Roxx review thread, at least 22 owners describe a fault on their own car in the screen, camera, connection, audio or app systems, and the first dated fault post is November 14, 2024. A broader count that adds 15 borderline or partly readable owners reaches 37, and both counts are minimums from one forum, since some thread pages could not be read.

We kept faults apart from feature gaps, such as CarPlay missing from the car, and from design behaviour, such as the screen dimming when the daytime running lamps are on. Owners report mixed results from software updates, and a May 2026 Team-BHP news piece relays patch notes for software 15.xx.xx second-hand.

The manual documents the AdrenoX Connect app, cluster navigation maps and wireless charger alerts, and the readable text has no passage on a screen blackout, camera fault or equaliser. No Mahindra document on any of these faults was found. Evidence label: Several reports. Infotainment rows checked as of October 31, 2026. The infotainment problems guide holds the owner key and the dated tables.

Features added after launch

A later build may differ from an early one. Rushlane’s August 2024 launch review listed push-button start without request sensors, so the key stayed in the pocket only until the door. In March 2025, CarWale’s report on three new features and Carlelo’s report on the upgrade reported request sensors for keyless entry, a sliding co-driver armrest and flat wipers. Neither cites a Mahindra statement or maps the changes to trims. One owner with a car delivered in December 2024 reports no door-sensor entry. The build date matters, so a used buyer should test the feature on the car.

Checked as of October 23, 2026 against the sources linked in the tables, apart from the infotainment rows noted above.

Are there any Thar Roxx recalls or service actions?

No Mahindra recall for the Thar Roxx turned up in the sources checked. The recalls and service notices on record cover the earlier Thar. Owners describe a steering service action, a fog lamp replacement and a torque map change that no Mahindra document confirms.

How to check your VIN

A recall and a service action both apply by build range and vehicle identification number (VIN), the 17-character code on your car. Ask an authorised Mahindra dealer to check your VIN against open campaigns and confirm the result in writing, and repeat the check at each service. The 2021 notice gives Mahindra’s 24×7 customer line as 1800-209-6006, a number printed on that notice, so confirm it is current. The lookup steps on Mahindra’s page could not be confirmed in the summary read for this guide.

Recall details are as reported by the outlets and pages above, read on October 23, 2026. A search of the sources found no Roxx-specific notice, so the record may be incomplete.

What is the Thar Roxx service schedule and maintenance cost?

Mahindra’s Roxx manual sends owners to the WSIG for the free and paid schedule and the lubrication chart. The only Roxx cost figures found are one owner’s bills of about Rs 3,000, Rs 5,500 and Rs 12,000 and a marketplace estimate that contradicts itself.

What the manual says about service

According to the manual’s quick reference table, the WSIG holds the schedule of free and paid services on page 23. The maintenance schedule and lubrication chart are on pages 24 and 28. Section 1.1 asks owners to record servicing in the WSIG and recommends Mahindra Genuine Parts for repairs. Section 1.4 says driving smoothly for the first 1,000 km helps prevent abnormal wear. It adds that a new engine may use more oil in those 1,000 km. A service reminder message appears in the cluster once the scheduled service limit is crossed (section 3.12.3). The manual gives no interval or price. Evidence label: documented by Mahindra, for the pointers only.

Spinny, September 11, 2025Two complimentary services at 5,000 and 10,000 km, then paid services with Rs 800 routine charges and extras; a five-year service total of Rs 17,562The total includes a sixth-year row; years one to five add to Rs 14,729; an FAQ on the same page says Rs 4,000 to Rs 6,000 per 10,000 km, and the first free services conflict with owner reports of a first service at 1,460 to 2,000 km

The sources disagree, and the WSIG is the authority. Ask the dealer for the schedule that applies to your VIN and the price of each visit before you book. V3Cars’ service table covers the 3-door Thar only, so it carries no Roxx figures.

Autocar India’s specification pageDieselA listed 15.2 km/l and a user-reported 13.55 km/l

Real-world diesel automatic figures in these reports run from about 9 to 13 km/l, so the listed figure sits above every owner’s number. The manual (section 3.1.5) gives the tank as about 57 litres, plus or minus 2. The low fuel telltale comes on at about 12 litres.

What the estimates leave out

Take a diesel automatic owner who drives 10,000 km a year. At 10 to 13 km/l, the car needs about 770 to 1,000 litres of diesel, and multiplying by the pump price you pay gives the fuel bill. Add the services above, insurance, and tyres on the 255/60 R19 size that Autocar India lists. Spinny shows Rs 48,000 for tyres in years three and five with no basis stated, so treat it as a placeholder. No source read gives a Mahindra price for the DEF refills a diesel car needs.

Figures here come from sources dated July 2025 to March 2026. Verify service prices with your dealer.

What has changed on the Thar Roxx since launch?

Since the August 2024 launch, the Roxx gained keyless entry sensors and other features in early 2025 and a 400 Nm tune on the higher diesel automatic. Prices fell after the September 2025 GST cut, the STAR EDN arrived in January 2026, and a price revision followed in July 2026. A facelift has only been spied.

Carlelo reported in December 2025 that a facelift was expected in 2026, possibly with a 1.5 litre diesel, from spy shots and speculation. Mahindra has confirmed none of it. A buyer of a new Roxx should ask the dealer which version is on offer. A used buyer should note the build date, since features and engine tune changed during production. What does the Thar Roxx warranty cover?

The Mahindra Thar Roxx warranty is reported at 3 years or unlimited km by a Spinny blog post, with wear items excluded. The manual points to page 14 of the WSIG for the term, so the figure stays unconfirmed until that guide is read. Read on October 23, 2026.

Is the Mahindra Thar Roxx reliable?

Evidence on Thar Roxx reliability is mixed and thin. One 13,000 km long-term report lists small faults, one 17,000 km owner lists many and advises enthusiasts, and no source read gives failure-rate data.

Points in its favourPoints againstUnknown
Autocar India’s 13,157 km report says the car handled a 600 km day without fatigueSteering knock reports from several owners, with outcomes ranging from partial relief to a replaced rackFailure rates for any part
A 16,000 km owner took a 4×4 course and trails and reports the car stood up to the obstacles so farFuel line rubbing reported by three owners and electronics glitches by severalWhether a root cause exists for the steering noise
Bharat NCAP gave five starsRegen warnings in two reports, one of them on a Ladakh convoy driveWhether every diesel carries the DPF and DEF display
Roadside assistance delays and a calliper left unsecured, each in one reportWhether the 400 Nm retune reaches earlier cars

The five-star result belongs in a separate column. Autocar India’s specification page lists 31.09 points for adults and 45.00 for children, and the star rating covers crash protection.

The 17,000 km owner says the Roxx suits enthusiasts with basic mechanical and electrical knowledge and a need for a tough 4×4 diesel. He says it suits a busy city dweller who wants carefree ownership less, and he suggests having more than two Mahindra service centres within 60 km. That is one owner’s opinion, and the CarToq report on a roadside assistance wait, and the report on a calliper left unsecured are single accounts too.

Judge a Roxx by four things: the trim and drivetrain, the build date, the service history and how the workshop handled any past fault. Reliability notes here summarise the sources above as read on October 23, 2026.

What should you check yourself before a workshop visit?

Note exactly when a warning appears and read the Warning History page. Check tyre pressure and, on a diesel, the DEF level display. Leave safety systems to an authorised workshop.

  1. Warning log. Record the date, speed, weather, trip length and whether the light cleared after a restart, and photograph the display. The manual’s Warning History page (section 3.11) shows the live warnings and their count.
  2. Tyre pressure. The tyre pressure monitoring alert, described in section 3.6.1, stays on until the tyre reaches the recommended pressure. Check pressure cold, and read the recommended value from the car’s own label.
  3. DEF level. On a diesel, read the DEF amount on the Fuel Info page (section 3.5.4).
  4. Engine temperature. Follow section 3.1.4 if the gauge climbs: switch off the air conditioning, check the coolant level, stop and let the engine cool.
  5. Fuel. The tank holds about 57 litres, and the low fuel telltale comes on at about 12 litres (section 3.1.5). Switch the ignition off while filling and on again for a correct level reading.
  6. Running-in. Drive smoothly for the first 1,000 km, and a new engine may use more oil in that time (section 1.4).

Items 1 to 6 come from the manual edition issued in August 2024 and released in April 2025. The log in item 1 is practical advice for workshop visits. Leave brakes, steering, airbags and the fuel system to the workshop.

What should you check when buying a new or used Thar Roxx?

When buying a new or used Thar Roxx, ask for service records and a written VIN check for open campaigns. Test the steering lock-to-lock, try every camera, screen, window and the sunroof, and look under the engine cover and at the rear brakes.

Mahindra Thar Roxx common problems: six rules to follow

Six rules cover the evidence.

  • Identify your trim, drivetrain and build date before reading any problem report, since 4×4 comes on the diesel only and features changed after launch.
  • Write down every warning with the date, speed and conditions, and photograph the display.
  • Read the manual’s warning and 4×4 pages before acting, and ask the workshop for any chapter this guide could not read.
  • Take steering, brake, fuel line and warning light concerns to an authorised workshop.
  • Keep every service record and ask for a written VIN check for open campaigns at each service.
  • Treat owner reports as reports, since they show what can happen to some cars.

Mahindra Thar Roxx common problems cluster around steering noise, diesel regen warnings and fuel line rubbing, with smaller electrical faults and no Roxx recall on record. Three planned guides will cover the Roxx 4×4 shift lever being hard or jammed, diesel DPF clogging and regeneration, and the differential oil change.

FAQs

Which Mahindra Thar Roxx common problems need a workshop first?

Steering noise, warning lights, fuel line rubbing and 4×4 faults come first. Owners describe a knocking steering column, a transmission warning with a stuck shifter, fuel lines wearing through and a 4×4 actuator replacement. Screen, camera and comfort glitches can wait for the next service visit. Photograph any warning, note the conditions and ask the workshop to record the visit.

Is the Thar Roxx reliable?

The evidence is mixed and thin. Reports range from small faults at 13,000 km to a long list at 17,000 km, while another owner reports no faults from off-roading. No source reports publish failure rates, and a five-star crash rating covers crash protection. Judge a car by its trim, build date, service history and the workshop’s record.

What does the DPF regen warning mean on a Thar Roxx diesel?

A REGEN page can appear on some cars when park regeneration is possible, with the DPF lamp on or blinking, and a long press of OK starts it. The emission chapter was unavailable, so the conditions and the other alerts are unconfirmed. Owners report a blinking regen warning at delivery and engine warning and sensor messages on a long trip. Take the car to a workshop.

Why does my Thar Roxx steering knock?

At least five owners reported a knocking or tak-tak noise in 2025. Some workshops described a loose lower intermediate shaft and re-torqued it; one said it had to replace a column, another replaced a rack, and results varied. No Mahindra explanation turned up. Note whether the noise comes over bumps or turning the wheel, and book an authorised workshop.

How much does a Thar Roxx service cost?

No Mahindra price list was available. One owner reports about Rs 3,000 at the first service, Rs 5,500 at the second and Rs 12,000 at the third, when the rear pads were found at the end of their life. A marketplace estimate contradicts itself and conflicts with owner reports. Ask the dealer for the schedule and a quote for your VIN before booking.

Is there a Thar Roxx recall, and can you check one by VIN?

No Roxx recall turned up in the sources checked. The recalls on record cover the earlier Thar, and owners describe a steering service action that no Mahindra document confirms. Recalls apply by build range and VIN, so give your 17-character VIN to an authorised dealer and ask for written confirmation that no campaign is open.
